“Morning at Longfellow Square”
I like to go to Longfellow Square on February 27. Longfellow’s birthday. To pay my respects to this creative mind. I remember being in middle school and having a field trip to Portland, and going to Longfellow’s childhood home. I don’t remember the details of the trip, maybe I should have paid more attention that day to where we were. But yet, in the 7th grade I didn’t know I was going to have a love affair with his poetry.
What I remember about this morning will always stay with me. I was there early like 630am, I wanted to get there so i didn’t have to pay a meter to park. Plus the square was quiet. I was done photographing the statue and some parts of the square when someone was walking by me an says “hey is that Penn State logo on your sweatshirt?” I smiled and said “yes” then this guy was telling me how much he misses Pennsylvania. After spending 13 years in the Lehigh Valley I asked him where he was from and he told me Pittsburgh.
This photo is one of my favorites because if I didn’t’ go to Longfellow Square that morning I doubt I would have ran into that man, the one person who out in Longfellow Square in Portland, Maine talking about how much we missed Pennsylvania. We all experience the journey of our lives and the morning of February 27, 2016, is one I will never forget.
